Battery-less ubiquitous wireless communications

Wireless communications are widely used at any time anywhere for the personal and mobile use. However, present wireless terminals need batteries to operate.

Wireless terminals without batteries are therefore strongly requested for ubiquitous wireless communications.

We developed a battery-less wireless terminal energized from capacitors charged by a hybrid power source with Piezo devices and solar cells. We also developed novel capacitor circuits which control charging and discharging the capacitors to effectively operate a Zigbee terminal.

We demonstrated that battery-less wireless ubiquitous communications were feasible and realized a transmission with the data volume of 496 Bytes/min or a transmission at the rate of 15 times/min with the battery-less wireless terminal.

One of examples of this system is shown in Fig. 4. When infants go for a walk with a leader, they put on shoes with this battery-less hybrid terminal. The communications between the leader and them are automatically carried out without operations.

Parents or teachers can easily grasp whether their infants are near them or not from ID information or the strength of received signals transmitted from infant terminals. It is also possible to detect infants who are getting separated from the group from the received signal level.
