 Battery-less Wireless Communication System for disasters and emergencies

A battery-less wireless communication system was developed for disaster victims to send a rescue request and inform a rescue party of their isolated locations when communication or power infrastructure is collapsed in the event of a disaster.

 

The system comprises a victim’s terminal, relay stations, and a parent station. The terminal is composed of a manual charger, a capacitor, a micro-processor (PIC), a GPS module, and a UHF wireless module.

 

The PIC controls the on/off operation of the GPS and the wireless module precisely to reduce their power consumption.

 

The victim’s location is estimated by the GPS data or signal levels received at the relay stations depending on the victim’s location. The victim can understand the rescue status by receiving answer-back signals from the parent station.

 

Experimental tests show that the power consumption of the terminal is 151 ~ 340 mW and the communication distance and the position estimation error are 3.6 km and 2 m respectively for outdoor use and 360 m and 8.5 m for indoor use.
