Energy Harvesting Battery-less Wireless Communications for IoT.

Energy harvesting battery-less wireless communications :

We have studied energy-harvesting wireless communication terminals for the purpose of securing the power supply of IoT sensors.

A simple configuration using existing parts was examined without using a special antenna or rectifying devices. As a result, we developed a wireless communication terminal that operates by collecting the energy of a VHF band wave and realized wireless transmission of acceleration sensor data.

The system configuration and experimental results are shown below.

As a result of the research, we have obtained the prospect of realizing a wireless communication system that uses energy harvesting technology to collect energy from incoming electromagnetic waves and operate without using a battery.

System image :

The system image is shown in Fig. 1. Figure 1 shows an overview of the system studied. The purpose of the system is to detect the signs of infrastructure facilities collapse such as buildings or bridges and then to notify the surroundings of the danger in advance.

Figure 2 shows the configuration of this wireless terminal. The incoming electromagnetic wave is received by the receiving antenna and rectified to charge the capacitor Ct.

As shown in Fig. 3, this terminal repeatedly charges and discharges Ct and uses the energy stored in Ct to intermittently operate the communication terminal (module).
